Twelve voices were shouting in anger, and they were all alike. No question, now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which. – From George Orwell’s Animal Farm

• Lanny Davis is a prominent Washington lawyer and a political analyst. From 1996 to 1998, he served as special counsel to President Clinton. From 2005 to 2006, he served on President Bush’s five-member Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board.

That is quite a bioblurb for a guy writing a piece on the virtues of lobbyists

http://washingtontimes.com/news/2008/nov/17/lobbyists-are-good-people-too/

However, it is an especially restrained piece of titulature since Lanny Davis is a lobbyist. A big successful one. Today on NPR he said he was a small-scale, part-time, temporary, seasonal lobbyist – Lobbyist Light. Davis went on to say that lobbyists aren’t bad people. They just work within a system with no transparency. That is like saying a thief is not a criminal because the houses should have better security systems. He says lobbyists are merely kind-hearted representatives sent to provide information for compassionate organizations like The American Heart Foundation. He glosses over some other lobbyists from other organizations – reps from massive, corrupt corporations like Merck or Phizer who provide skewed, erroneous industry reports usually submitted with large envelopes of cash. “Vote how you like Senator, here’s a few thousand dollars, and a ticket to Bermuda to think about it.”  Davis states that, “the First Amendment protects petitioning and communicating with government.”  I don’t think petitioning and communicating includes money drops or anonymous donations.

These in fact may be a corrupt minority.  However, just like a couple of pedophile priests, it only takes a few to ruin the reputation of the many. Moreover, if the righteous majority doesn’t condemn the shameless few, if they, in fact incubate and protect them and their illegal dealings, then they too are complicit in the crime. So maybe Lanny Davis is right, and there are some good lobbyists out there. It seems there just aren’t enough. Or maybe they just aren’t that good.

The solution is simple. There is no logical reason why any lobbyist ever needs to provide gifts or money of any kind to a public representative. So don’t allow them to do it. They can provide research findings and reports and information as they are supposed to and then leave it at that. Better yet, maybe our representatives can do more independent research into issues. Or, here’s a really wild concept, they could seek more direct input from their constituents.

It is a good time to review Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s 35 Articles of Impeachment, which he has repeatedly levied against George W. Bush. While most have ignored him and many have mocked him, Kucinich is one of the few who continuously questioned the legality of Bush’s policies. It may be too late to rely on these articles of impeachment, but many of them would still make appropriate criminal indictments.

(The following is a guest post from a former Kool Aid drinking friend who has since been turned by conservative talk radio. He asked me to file this for him here. In the spirit of Bill O’Reilly and everything fair and balanced, ladies and gentleman, my fearless, honest and right friend, Acerbico.)

I will admit that I used to believe in the hopeful message of Barack Obama. I used to think that there was a benefit for working together for common goals.  But, I have seen how things really work.  Like my man Jon Justice said – we can’t all be a bunch of John Lennons.  To attain my present state of enlightenment, I first had to shed the blinders of mainstream liberal media.  Instead I came to rely on the good old radio for fresh objective information. I am not talking about that Soviet run NPR, either! The truth that I have discovered on the fairwaves has made me, not only second guess my loyalties, it has made my sphincter tighten permanently. And in case you can’t tell, you soon will; it has made me really really angry. But more importantly, it has made me truly intellectual, not just “liberally intellectual”, what with all their stupid books.

The radio, it seems, is the only place left where you can find the truth. In fact, here in Tucson, Arizona they make it really easy; they call the one truthful radio station The TRUTH 104.1. All caps are a sure sign that it’s extra truthful and extra powerful. Just like how easy it is to see when someone loves just ordinary freedom or when someone loves real FREEDOM. Then, just to make me feel even more patriotic, they have a morning jock named Jon Justice! He’s always lobbing in his high-pitched artillery, blasting local and national socialists alike. Whew, it’s like starting off the day with the fresh smell of napalm in the morning. The TRUTH 104.1 Then, just in case there is any doubt remaining, they have a clever tag line – Fearless, Honest and Right. See, now that’s what’s called a double entrendre, which is French for really clever. It means that The TRUTH 104.1 is right as in correct but also right as in conservative-leaning in political ideology. Now that’s what I mean about true intellect.

Most Kool Aid drinking libs wouldn’t get that. Kool Aid drinkers are brainless apparatchiks who are unquestioningly loyal to some political leader, party or ideologue. See, it’s a reference to the Jonestown cult who all drank Kool Aid because they were so brainwashed by listening to this Jones guy, and not thinking for themselves. So when my man, Rush Limbaugh tells me what all those wacko Kool Aid drinkers are really up to and what I should think about it, I just shout out “Ditto Rush!” Oh, and for all you brainwashed liberals out there, an apparatchik is a Kool Aid drinker. See how that works? Double entendre! I wouldn’t expect you to understand. There are all sorts of things you couldn’t possibly comprehend.

First of all, you think that Obama is so smart because he utilized the Internet to build grassroots support especially among young voters. Hello! Open your eyes. This may seem like a wise strategy, if you are a socialist, liberal Kool Aid drinker. However in actuality it was a diversion to take the national focus away from the real communication power base – the radio. You all think he is so concerned about internet based support and networks? See, even though he has emphatically denied supporting the Fairness Doctrine, Obama does in fact (according to Rush – Ditto!) intend to reenact a 1949 law to limit the power of the radio waves. Yes, he is that dangerous. And none of you even realize it. You are all thinking Internet, when the real thinkers are all in radio.

Oh, and another thing you liberals are too vapid to realize is that right after he raises all of our taxes, Obama is going to take away our guns and our rights and ability to get more guns. It’s true, and I know it’s true because I heard it on the 104.1 the TRUTH which is Fearless, Honest and Right! About ten minutes after the the major networks announced Obama won the presidency, every gun shop was inundated with orders and they instantly sold out, even slingshots, and the FBI had 47 million requests for background checks for new gun owners, and 97.8% of those requests came from NRA affiliated, Republican registered, National Review subscribers. So, it’s pretty easy to see what’s going on here. Obama is going to take our guns, and his followers are all going to come after us. He will mandate abortions and make everyone marry someone else of the same sex. And the little free bibles in all motels will be replaced with Korans. So, you see, I need my guns to protect me from young pregnant Muslim teens on their way home from the abortion clubs and all the gay guys out there who will try to force me to marry one of them. It is all right there in plain sight… on the radio. You just have to know how to listen.

That is not all I have learned. You libs think your man Obama is so articulate. Well, he doesn’t know how to engage in conversation. All his polite listening, exchanging and discussing, makes him look weak. I prefer the conversational attactics of my man Neal Bortz. He’s a master of a really neat trick of using respectful terms immediately preceding an insult. This way he comes across as considerate but also dominant and RIGHT (in every sense of the word!). Some pinhead called the show recently and Neal said, “You, sir, are too ignorant to articulate your thoughts clearly.” Then he hung up on the liberal putz, before he could even respond. Clearly, Neal won that argument. No room for liberal Gotcha journalism on the radio.

Other things you should all be aware of: He’s not an American citizen. He was born in an Al Queda training camp, up in Northern Manitoba, and his half-brother is David Ayers. Don’t be fooled by his undeniable lack of experience, Obama is personally responsible for the nosedive the country has taken over the past 8 years. He will start a secret police force that is loyal only to him. It will be called the Fist Bump Force. Oh, and their little fist bumps won’t be so cute, let me tell you! Obama wants to paint the White House black and then move it, brick by precious brick, to Kenya. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are really secret relatives of Obama and the $700 billion went to their personal bank accounts where they were quickly converted into Cuban pesos. There are so many items on his secret agenda. I don’t have to to list it all here, or even to think about it very carefully. Thankfully I don’t have to. I have some RIGHT thinking friends who can do that for me. You won’t read about these things in the newspapers or on your precious new-age “Internet”. No, because they are controlled by a the liberal media. Which is just fine with me, because I don’t much care for reading anyway. Besides, it’s all out there for public consumption, provided by the voices of TRUTH on the radio! The true, American, all caps HEROES of the American Airwaves! USA! USA! USA! Ditto!

Submitted by one who never submits!

When Bush started his Presidency, one of his first major acts was to stand on a pile of rubble in New York and tell us all to go shopping.

His last major act, as he stood on a pile of rubble that was now the U.S. Economy, was to tell us all to pay the bill.

We did.

Republicans need to stop trying to distance themselves from Bush and Iraq. They embraced him. They followed him they lapped up his lies and asked for more. We all are stuck now with the dismal state of the nation he has created. I can accept my part in that, because we all let him do it. But it was the Republicans who asked for it. Now they try to pretend like they had nothing to do with his policies and all their destructive results. They try to forget that all of them, including their new pet John McCain, walked in stride and stood in support of Bush. All of them submitted to his ill-conceived schemes to make the world a better place. At home and around the world, he failed miserably. McCain failed miserably. The Republican Party failed miserably. And Republican citizens, the foundation of that Party failed, too. Now own it. Bush is your baby, heaped upon all of us. Iraq is your war of lies, heaped upon all of us. Now it is time to take ownership of it and do something to help heal these wounds. You got us into this mess, do your part to get us out. Support investigations.

As Barack Obama took his stage, no longer a shrewd candidate but a victorious President Elect, we could see him for all he truly is, not just that which he has projected over the past 22 months. We could clearly see, for the first time, a man walking in the shadow of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Of course we have all recognized him as that before, and we all talked about it. But it wasn’t how he was defined during the campaign. It couldn’t be or he never would have taken that stage in Grant Park victorious, and there never would have been a crowd of 200,000 elated to the point of tears. He couldn’t be just an African-American candidate running on the platform of equality and human dignity. As noble and necessary and natural as those truths are, they are not the only issues that define Barack Obama. He is not only an African-American, but he is an African-American. He is not only a White-American, but he is white. After his speech in Chicago, the pundits self-consciously vacillated between the terms “African-American” and “Biracial”. Like America, there is no one term to describe who we are. Can he be both? Like Walter White, champion of the NAACP and an unquestionably courageous hero, Obama walks in two worlds. As a result he knows blacks and whites in ways we can never truly know ourselves.

Walter White (1893-1955)

Obama is in essence the best of all of us. That is not to detract from the moment when, as a victor, when the race was finally won, that he could openly embrace, as a black man, the mantle of Dr. King. Like King, he has bigger aspirations than racial equality. King saw racial equality as a natural state, made unnatural by the decree of man. Racial equality is a foregone conclusion, if we don’t hinder it. We were all mixed up about it, but it would come to be, as directed by Nature, as dictated by God. And so that equality was part of his focus. He also focused on other major issues affecting all: poverty and healthcare and unemployment. These are the issues that cross the color lines. King recognized that poverty did not discriminate, as wealth does. These are the issues that made King not just a leader of the African-American community, but of an entire nation struggling for better lives. These are the other issues that made him not a only a Racial-Rights leader but a Civil Rights leader.

mlk

It is easy to want paint him with a specific brush. But he requires a complex palette, because he took on all the complex issues not just the most obvious and shameful. He said, “We will not be satisfied until ‘justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.’” This is as true of our national revulsion to racism as it is to our national revulsion to corporate greed or rape. King didn’t just march so that blacks could sit in better seats on a bus, or drink from a better water fountain. He marched also so America’s poor (black, white and all others) could receive education, employment and improved housing.

Barack Obama, too, is a man of change. Big Change. Sweeping Change. Change for all of us. This is why at Grant Park it was so important for him to evoke the memory of Martin, and the power of those uncompromising ideals. But, like King, his goals are not limited with the equality of all races. Again, these are natural. It is like dedicating your entire life to promoting the wind. The wind shall blow; all we must do is not attempt to hinder its natural path. Through Obama, the wide-reaching dreams of King are coupled with the unimaginable challenges levied by John Kennedy. Obama evoked both great leaders when he said:

I know you didn’t do this just to win an election and I know you didn’t do it for me. You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime – two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century. Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us. There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after their children fall asleep and wonder how they’ll make the mortgage, or pay their doctors bills, or save enough for college. There is new energy to harness and new jobs to be created; new schools to build and threats to meet and alliances to repair.

The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America – I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you – we as a people will get there.

portrait-jfk1Obama reminded us of both great leaders, in his message, and in his character. I saw Dr. King’s Dream come true on that stage in the smiles of Obama’s daughters and Biden’s granddaughters. Their families present us a mirror on America: a mountain of experiences and a deep ocean of potential. Kennedy’s vision was apparent in Obama’s challenge to us. This is the dawn of a new age when we once again must ask what we can do for our country. The challenges ahead seem as insurmountable as the moon once had. The commitment to solve them is unwavering and eternal, requiring dedication and sacrifice. Kennedy and King never promised us a hand out. They promised us a fair shake. They promised opportunities for us to be our best, as individuals and as neighbors. They promised us the endless possibility that comes with equality and self-respect. Once again, we will be presented with this moment opportunity. What we make of it, is up to us. Together. All of us.

Now, let’s act.

A friend who gave up on the dream of America a long time ago wrote this:

“For the first time in a while, I
am a proud American. For at least one day, we can look the rest of
the world in the eye and say “hey, when it counts, who is the most
progressive? When something bigger than each of us is at stake, who
can make the right choice?” We showed tonight the true strength of
our political system, and moral character, after 12 years of it being
buried by nonsense. Whatever happens tomorrow, or a year from now, or
four years from now, we have every right to be proud of this day, and
look back on it as a time when we did the right thing.”

This is a fine moment in our history. A powerful moment for us as a people. But it is just a moment. It is up to us to come together to build something from this moment. The next year, the next four years… all of it, is up to us.

The only thing he’s promised us is the chance to do something ourselves.  An opportunity to be active participants again.  He can do very little.  You can do very little.  I can do very little.   The last time we had a leader who asked for the best of us, we reached the moon.  WE can do anything.
