Sarah Palin’s overnight emergence (literally) on the national scene has taught us all some valuable lessons in political maneuvering. A “game-changer” will hold the entire base in awe, but for only about a week – unless he/she can say something intelligent at that point. Also, a fresh-faced political outsider can shout out anything to a crowd of like-minded people and they will rave like mad dogs, even calling for blood (again, literally). However, Palin has affected us all in ways we may not have realized. She has made us all more intelligent.
Palin has blundered her way through some painful presentations that have made audiences cringe. Some of the most noticeable gaffes have been when she proudly said that she could see Russia from Alaska or when she couldn’t recall a single Supreme Court decision besides Roe v. Wade. She also couldn’t name a single printed news source. Then she frantically admitted to reading them all. She didn’t know the Bush Doctrine. She named the wrong U.S. military commander in Afghanistan. She certainly said some things that made all of us irritated that she’s honestly within a very-probable stroke away from the presidency. However it also filled us each with a quiet sense of pride. As we loudly screamed, “I can’t believe she is that stupid!” We quietly considered, “I’m not that stupid. Am I?” Then we secretly reassured ourselves, “No, I am definitely smarter than her.” Then we all covertly sought to ensure that we were indeed smarter than Sarah Palin.
Google was inundated with searches for “Alaska view Russia”. People learned that in fact someone could in fact see Russia from Alaska if they are standing atop an igloo on a specific island at the height of spring for one day only and only for about an hour. If we didn’t get all that, we did at least learn that Sarah Palin can not in fact see Russia from her back porch.
As for Supreme Court decisions, most of us out of high school could have easily tossed forth Brown v. The Board of Education – an easy no-brainer, go-to decision. But most of us might not immediately be able to recall the names of any of our other favorites. Therefore if we were ever on an RV with Katie Couric and she asked us, we too might look stupid. She wouldn’t let us get away with just tossing out Brown v. The Board. She would have smiled her ferociously cute smile and said, “What others?” And then, we would be found out. Can’t have that. So, we checked out some of the other big decisions we agree with but can’t think of their names. What else is there again? Scopes? Come on, there has to be something more recent! So we do a quick search – just to remind ourselves. Oh, yeah, there was that Lawrence v. Texas. I agreed with that one. Individual rights and all, you know. Super, that was just five years ago. Oh, but I can’t be talking about that one with Katie, not first off anyway. I will have to bury that one in my list a bit. What else? There were all those Guantanamo decisions, in the past few years. I liked those. Would Katie let me get away with just calling them “those Guantanamo decisions”? I better write them down. There were four?! Okay after some searching you might end up with a list of four or five that you can proudly carry into work on Monday, or even sit down for a “friendly” with Katie. But you can stand tall knowing that, with Brown v. The Board you knew more than Palin!
“News sources? Well, I prefer to get my news from a number of sources, mostly on the internet. Did you know that internet news sources now far outpace the printed press. Yes, it’s true. Hm? Which ones do I read? Oh, well I am glad you asked. I usually start off with my personal news settings from Google news. Yeah, I like to balance it out, so I am not getting my news filtered through a partisan lens. I don’t shy away from the New York Times, but I like to counterbalance it with some of my favorite columnists from the Washington Post. But mostly, I like an international perspective. I subscribe to The Economist. I really think they have a firm but friendly perspective on America’s roll in the world. The Guardian is good too. Of course, there is the Wall Street Journal. Oh, and Time and Newsweek of course – usually just peruse the headlines on those. So, yeah… really a pretty balanced array of news sources for me. Hm? Which Washington Post columnists? … Shit!”
Now, as for Bush’s Doctrine, I will defend Palin on this one. It is so far, the only defense I will make on her behalf. When Charlie asked her about the Bush Doctrine, I too began to rack my brain. What did he mean? There are so many! Bush’s domestic doctrine? – Which has reigned in our civil liberties systematically over the past 8 years. The judiciary doctrine? – putting 2 judges on the supreme court who refuse to make left hand turns while driving for fear they might start thinking incorrectly; or illegally firing district judges who wouldn’t follow Bush’s party line? How about Guantanamo and extraordinary rendition or enemy combatants? How about his fiscal doctrine, the furious deregulation of banks and their overlord financial institutions? How about blood for oil? That’s a Bush doctrine. So, I thought Palin’s response was acceptable, “In what respect Charlie? You mean Bush’s world view?” Oh! He meant preemptive invasion. So now that is THE Bush doctrine? That is just the first chapter. Still we all knew more about it than she did. She just got lucky on that one.
I knew the guy in Afghanistan was a McSomething, and NOT McCain nor McDonald’s. I like to think that in a debate I wouldn’t have just winged it with “McClellen”. I would have just said “the commander in Afghanistan”. No one but Katie would have called me out on it, certainly not Biden. The folks I talk to day-to-day wouldn’t have known his name either. But we all do now. As soon as I heard her say it, I knew it didn’t sound right. Sure enough, within minutes the blogosphere was bombarded with corrections. McKiernan. We’re all straight on that one now.
So, in her own way Sarah Palin has done our country a great service. In direct defiance of her blatant ignorance on issues vital to anyone seeking the second highest office in the land, we have all become smarter. Now, thanks to Palin dumbing-down the interview process, we can all proudly say, “Hell, if she can do it… I can do it better.” Now, let’s all hope, and pray (and vote) that this is the last service she does for our nation.
Typo? Should “can not in fact see Alaska from her back porch” be
“can not in fact see Russia from her back porch” or
“can not in fact see a damn thing from her back porch”?
I think I’ve really thought about this almost daily since she came on the scene. Well, maybe that’s not totally honest… perhaps all of last year whenever Bush made another “Bushism” type gaffe. What I love about your perspective is the fact that you put yourself in the role of being interviewed and walk us through your thoughts including the ones that show you would mess up! lol So funny and true!
palin is tragic. she is being abused by mccain.she may not win her re-election in alaska after they lose in november.
Don’t worry about the polls! Please get out and VOTE! VOTE early so that you can help others Vote on November 4th! Vote early ,because you don’t want to wait until the last minute! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!
With respect to SCOTUS decisions though, the question asked was “Are there other decisions that you DISAGREE with?” (emphasis mine). THe decision in “Brown v. Board of Education” is widely accepted and I would doubt that even Gov. Palin disagrees with it (although I have no specific knowledge of her opinion in this case). Likewise, the vast majority or SCOTUS opinions that people with whom I’ve spoken have been able to recall fall into the same category if “widely accepted” (e.g. “Miranda v. Arizona”).
As far as opinions with which I disagree, after quite some thought, I was able to recall “Crawford v. Marion County” although I would not have been able to relate the title off the top of my head and would only have been able to state the nature of the case itself.
Gov. Palin has far too many faults worthy of disdain to dwell on this particular one.
Kudos, or is it, cudos, ha ha ha? OHG that was funnier than shit, I laughed my ass off–such great sarcasm, cynicsm and I must agree, let’s hope Palin isn’t able to perform anymore ’services’ for our nation. Cheers–laughter is definitely the best medicine–still, ha ha ha!
Very funny, very well-written, very true! Thanks for writing…
very nice blog – added you to my blogroll!
I have stopped reading and listening to much that comes out of Palin’s mouth any more – I think I was starting to lose brain cells from it.
My aren’t you proud of yourself. So what that she couldn’t name these things off the top of head. Does she grasp the big picture? Yes, she does. Will she able to help McCain in the White House? Yes, she will.
A better question to be asking yourself is …
When Obama raises the taxes and big companies, who really is goint to pay those taxes. Those companies aren’t going to just pay higher taxes to be patriotic. No Way! They will pass those costs on to you and me. Think of the products that you by on a regular basis – groceries, utilities, clothing, toilet paper, toys, computer parts, you will have to pay more to cover the higher tax rate. Keep that in mind when you cast your vote.
hi peter,
i agree with writingroads:
this was well written…..very comical….and might i add, also educational!
SCOTUS decisions I disagree with – without having to look any of them up:
- Dredd Scott
- The Florida cancellation of vote counting for no apparent reason (though Palin wouldn’t agree)
- The recent one that gave local government eminent domain when the only interest was commercial
And I could have easily talked around those for a minute or two and talked about decisions that I DID agree with.
Pathetic.
Now, let’s all hope, and pray (and vote) that this is the last service she does for our nation.
Do liberals really pray?
Thanks for your Palin post. I don’t think of myself as being that smart, but I’m not running for the vp or pres office of the USA. I want someone a whole lot smarter than me up there. And that would not be Palin. Thanks for the insight and humor. Hope we can all laugh when Mrs. Palin hopefully goes back to serve Alaska citizens in November.
The Supreme Court decision I’m amazed did not jump out was the June 25, 2008 decision to lower the already reduced 2.5 billion in punitive damages to some $287 million dollars in the Exxon Valdez oil spill. This spill affected the lives of some 32,677 Alaskan citizens who made their living in the Alaskan fishing and other industries hurt by the spill.
How could she forget something so big in her own back yard?
Maybe it wasn’t printed on her Starbucks Cup news source.
Exxon Shipping Co. and Exxon Mobil Corp. v. Baker, 07-219
At least Liberals praying is better than Conservatives praying. Look what Conservative prayers have brought onto the US. Horrid foreign policy which have led to two failed wars, torture, lessened US global hegemony, crappy domestic policy (which again have lessened US global hegemony) and so on and so forth. I honestly can’t believe that people want a hockey mom to run their country. Great conservative minds of the past must be turning in their graves.
I loved the article! Both McCain and Palin seem to be missing the obvious — you shouldn’t run a campaign without a good plan for how to solve problems once you’re in office. All McCain says is “I know how to do that!” Republicans have done well in the past using the power of negativism and dividing the citizens against each other another using “hot” religious and social issues like abortion and gay marriage — issues that have nothing to do with the big problems at hand. I doubt the old strategies will work this time. People are in dire need of serious help on so many fronts, that candidates need to discuss serious ways to solve the problems we face. McCain and Palin act as if they’re in a high school popularity contest.
You sure is smarter than her!
Since we now know that you don’t have to be intelligent to be seen as a VP, every Bubba with a shotgun will be running for office. I’d better stock up on the chewing tobaccy and get ready to make big sales. Politics can be a lucrative business for us hockey moms.
Sarah Palin will soon be 45 years of age. Her religious beliefs don’t allow conception and/or abortion.
She currently has 5 children; the youngest, a Down child. Maternal age influences the chances of conceiving a baby with Down syndrome. Above age 45 the probability is one in 19.
In time, we will truly see either how responsible, moral or steadfastly-religious Gov. Palin truly is. Will the Todd and Sarah Palin continue to go forth and multiply, given an understanding of the risks? Or will they turn their backs on the tenets of their faith?
Well said! Very Clever…(-;
I’m checking out the rest of your blog as well
check out my blog when you get a chance.

[...] Maybe I ain’t no genius, but I’s sure is smarter’n her! [...]
The point is she is applying for the job of Vice President, and potentially President, therefore she needs to be able to answer these questions without hesitation if she wants us to believe she is qualified for this position. Her inability to answer the questions asked of her shows her lack of preparation, inferior education, and possibly lack of interest in the subjects, etc. As citizens we are the interview panel, and in my opinion she should be disqualified from running, she does not meet the minimal requirements for the job.
What about her is so irritating? I know, it is the BS and that voice that grinds; with a certain accent I could be watching a Coen brothers movie.
Compared to Biden, she is a genius – Biden who likes to lie about his IQ. Compared to Obama, she is a great speaker. How intelligent is somebody who without a teleprompter sounds like ah, ah…ummm, wait a minute let me get this ah, ah. Palin loves freedom, Obama loves Marxism. Enough said.
Palin, the She-Bush, turns my stomach.
“Also, a fresh-faced political outsider can shout out anything to a crowd of like-minded people and they will rave like mad dogs,……”
Here I thought you were was writin about Gov. Palin & you jumps right to talking about your choice for Prez. What gives?? Is you ignerint? LOL-well written!
—————————————————————————
And to Olivia- I totally agree with your statement
“As citizens we are the interview panel, and in my opinion she should be disqualified from running, she does not meet the minimal requirements for the job….”
I feel the same way amout Obama as you do about Palin. Minimal requirements for the job=a valid birth certificate. Does he meet the minimal requirements???
I really think if Obama wins in a few weeks the media will look back and declare unanimously that the day Palin stepped on as VP, was the day the McCain campaign turned into a circus act…
Perfect example of “you giveth and you taketh…”
Sure she excited the base and “rocked” the GOP Convention but she also undermined the integrity of the McCain campaign…
He is just too old for anyone who reads to really be able to take a chance on her…

First off, kudos for the brilliant piece….
Secondly, Palin is a masterpiece – a person whose political knowledge is so flawed that she might make a fitting successor to Pres. Bush. Heck, she cannot even manage her family affairs(I would rather inculcate family values than have a pregnant teenager at home)!!!
I think it should be Palin for President and McCain for VP. That would mean we would have more Bushisms or Palinisms. On a more serious note, Palin would contribute to the Bush legacy of messing everything of any significance – economic policy, homeland security, fundamental rights, disaster relief(I can’t forget Katrina) and really stupid foreign policy.
The Republicans have done a bloody wonderful job by providing America with the Bush-Cheney pair. Now they are out to prove that they have more such combinations. Any decent student pursuing political studies would do a much better job.
Hopefully, America will vote wisely
I do not want to feel good about being better informed than the VP. I would like the VP to be much better informed and smarter on this issues. Therefore, I disagree with you.
Furthermore, must care about people, and not just about power.
To me it’s the shameless dishonesty, the prostitution of values and the promotion of hate.
All to keep grabbing the tentacles of power, that feeds from greed and cultivates corruption.
If eight years of raping and pillaging the coffers of our nation is not enough to stop the absurd game of exclusion, consider parsing conservative this way,
C-O-N to S-E-R-V A moT-I-V-E
The motive is to insure a one way trip to hell to get back what they had inflicted in this and many other countries around the world.
PJ, the brilliance of this Palin/Self juxtaposition goes without saying. Thanks for the analysis – I already feel better about myself.
Feel free to check out my site if you want an occasional chuckle at McCain-Palin’s expense.

In some ways I feel bad for Palin. She is making a fool of herself in front of the entire country, and she is embarassing her family as well. She seems very simple-minded and sheltered to me. Every time that she opens her mouth I feel like I lose about ten I.Q. points. Politicians should be informed and educated about world affairs, foreign and domestic. I feel like a high school debater hcould beat her and that she would lose in a round of extemperaneous speaking. Lets be honest part of being a politician is also being able to B.S. your way through a debate and be able to prove your point, even if you don’t have much to work with, not flirt and wink your way through a debate. Governor Palin, can I call you Sarah?
Nice article. I treat Palin’s obsession with William Ayers in my my new little blog at
http://www.kennamdahl.wordpress.com
I’ll check back here from time to time. You write well.

I’m pretty progressive…Libertarian and I really have to ask about her “family values” here. It may be “Sexist” but as a mother of JUST ONE child with autism, I can’t imagine how she’s doing anything with her baby at this time in his life. I can only hope her hubby gives up his fishing biz. Would I ask the same question of a man? Maybe, if he had five kids and his wife worked full time. They must have some good help.
On her stupidity issues, I had relatives write me from the UK asking what the hell is going on over here. LOL. We ARE the laughing stock. :shakes head: If it weren’t for Tina Fey, I’d be crying.

Will Palin can be the good Ruler of US? the fact! she ain’t a good mother of her daughter!
For sure! hahah..you are more clever than Palin!
I tend to disagree with your article. I like her because she isn’t the elitist that we are used to in politics and that’s what makes her appealing to us independent conservatives. Remember that the Senate and the House were run my Democrats these past few years. So basically the reality is that if you want socialism vote for Obama and if you want capitalism vote for McCain. Very simple. I figure despite the past acquaintences and decisions for either canidate and I’m looking at what both have talked about for the future plans— After evaluating all these things….I think I’ll vote for the lesser evil— which iI believe is McCain.
Despite those who criticise her decision to be the running mate with McCain Palin will be an asset to the white house and essentially a breath of fresh air!
I vote one, one, for my conscienceness.
Two, two, two for my representative.
Three, three, for a candidate.
Four, four, I forgot what four was for.
Five, five five for my lessons,
Six, Six
to average joe:
For “elitist” see — normal, logical human being who bases decisions on a valid reasoning process, and doesn’t speak like every idiot redneck that’s actually still considering voting for McCain/Palin at this point. (”I done did heard that Obama’s an Ay-rabb!” – funny how McCain even has to try and quell the rabid bigotry of his own constituents now http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14479.html)
As for Democrats = socialism — I guess it’s only socialism when poor people receive part of the government support. When it’s some of the richest companies in America receiving this assistance, it’s called a “bailout”. Is this like trickle-down socialism?
And trying to talk fancy doesn’t mean you have anything worth saying (acquaintences?). And labeling yourself an “independent” conservative doesn’t make you any less of an idiot.
To Abe
I’m one of those “idiot rednecks that’s actually still considering voting for McCain/Palin at this point. I’m also poor and yet I don’t want any government cheese. You can have my share of “government support”. I don’t accept charity.
